During prosperous times, people spend money freely. There is little thought toward value. When the economy is in a slump, people begin to find ways to save a dollar. For example, during the Great Depression, Americans found themselves in extremely tough times. People had to do whatever they could in order to survive. They had to find ways to stretch every penny just to provide the bare essentials.
Survivors of those times recount, sometimes with fondness, how they managed to endure. How rather than replacing clothing when it was worn, it would be mended. When something was worn beyond repair, the bits and pieces would be saved to be used to repair something else. Food scraps would be used to make soups and stews. Nothing was wasted.
While no other recession has ever been as bleak as the one that started in 1929, there have been others. Each time, people have made adjustments in order to endure.
